Rion sat at the table typing furiously. He knew what time the plane landed but didn’t know how long it would take Nick to get home. He glanced at the clock every twenty minutes or so, but continued to focus on Darren and William’s first meeting during freshman orientation at the University of Oxford and how they quickly connected, only to find out that they were roommates. His feelings were mixed. He wanted Nicholas to call and let him know he was home. But he didn’t want Nicholas to call because that would not be a clean break, not what they had agreed upon. He wasn’t sure which option would kill him faster.

He dug deeper into his story, focusing on his characters’ love lives instead of his own. When his phone finally buzzed next to him, it startled him and he flinched. He grabbed it quickly. It was a text from Nick.

Rion found himself laughing uncontrollably. When he got himself together, he sent a text back.

[Rion: Good, huh?]

[Nick: I will never judge your choices again.]

[Rion: LOL]

[Nick: I miss your laugh.]

[Rion: Dammit, Nicky. If this is your idea of a clean break, you suck at it.]

[Nick: I can’t help it. NWAWR]

It took Rion less than a moment to figure out what the acronym was, and his heart immediately melted.

[Rion replied back: RWAWN2]

[Nick: I’ll dream about you tonight.]

[Rion: And every night for a while.]

[Nick: I’m lying here already missing the way your body feels next to me.]

[Rion: Inside of me. I miss you inside of me.]

[Nick: Fuck. This is not a clean break.]

[Rion: We are so incredibly fucked aren’t we?]

[Nick: I almost turned back around and got on the next plane to Heathrow when I landed in New York. That’s how fucked we are.]

[Rion: Don’t do that. If I see you, I won’t stop myself from falling for you this time. Don’t do that to me.]

[Nick: Can I call you at least? Can I hear your voice?]

Rion held the phone tighter in his hand, knowing he should say no. Instead, he pressed the phone icon next to Nick’s name. Nick answered the phone on the first ring.

“Ree,” he said softly.

“Hi, Nicky,” Rion said softly back. Neither spoke for another minute, letting the longing in the silence speak volumes. “What are you doing?”

“Lying on my couch looking up at the moon,” Nick said. “It makes me feel closer to you, knowing you can see it, too.”

Rion stood up and went over to the terrace. “It is the same moon, isn’t it?”

“The very same.” Nick let out an audible sigh. “You’re gonna be okay?”

“No,” Rion replied. “But I will be, eventually.”

“Yeah. Me too.” They were silent for another long moment, and then Nick said, “Get some rest. It’s after midnight over there.”

Rion realized he had not eaten all day. “I will in a moment. After I order my gourmet burger and pretend like it’s a Whopper.” Nick chuckled. “Will you call me tomorrow?”

“Yes,” Nick said automatically. “And every day you’ll let me.”

“Okay,” Rion agreed.
